2.4 billion people across the globe – that's 1-in-3 of us – require some form of assistive technology (AT). That’s things like wheelchairs, reading glasses, hearing aids, screen readers, and prostheses. AT enables people with disabilities to lead independent, fulfilling lives and participate within their communities on an equal basis with others.
Yet across the Pacific, limited availability and high costs keep AT out of reach for the vast majority who need it. Without it, people with disabilities can be all but eliminated from opportunities for education, employment, and human connection, locking people with disabilities into cycles of poverty and isolation. Access to AT is more than just a convenience - it’s a human right.
We can and must do better to #UnlockTheEveryday and break down barriers for millions of people with disabilities within our region.
As we celebrate International Day of People with Disabilities, let’s commit to ensuring AT is accessible, affordable, and available for all, so no-one is left behind.

Women and gender diverse people with disabilities face double the marginalisation and encounter greater barriers across society, from accessing education to healthcare, sport and community activities, and to many resources.
These challenges are exacerbated by socio-economic barriers, gender inequalities, and limited access to assistive technology, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMCIs) like the Pacific.
Take a look at CBM Australia's #IDPD2024 video, featuring people with disabilities from our Pacific region. This video tackles the important issue of Gender & Disability, and its impact on people with disabilities.
